Mild weather ahead of Christmas weekend in Austria

At the beginning of the coming week, it will become significantly milder from the west of Austria.

The wintry weather conditions will only last until the weekend. Next week, there will be maximum temperatures of up to plus ten degrees Celsius. The relatively low prospect of a white Christmas, predicted by the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) on Wednesday, is thus also supported by the current forecast from Thursday.

Before Christmas, the weekend comes mild weather from the west
Today, Friday, it will still rain and snow frequently at the beginning because the sky will be cloudy apart from a few exceptions. The snow line lies north of the main Alpine ridge between low elevations and around 500 meters above sea level, while further south and southeast, between 500 and 1,000 meters. In parts of Carinthia, southern Styria and Burgenland, there may also be slippery conditions due to freezing rain. While in the west, it will partly rain or snow persistently, in the eastern half, precipitation will take a more extended break until the afternoon. Snowfall will only start again from the south down to low elevations from mid-afternoon hours. In addition, there will be primarily weak winds from northwesterly directions; in the east, it will be moderately lively. In the morning, minus four to plus two degrees are expected, and during the day, a maximum of minus one to plus five degrees, with the higher values in southeastern Austria.

Also, on Saturday morning, the sky will often be cloudy, and east of Hohe Tauern and Upper Austria, it will initially still snow widely and sometimes intensively. By noon, however, the snowfall generally decreases; in the afternoon, the cloud cover also slowly loosens. Further in the west, however, the sun can already prevail in the morning. Here, it will also remain largely dry until the evening. The wind will come from the northwest and blow moderately to briskly in the Föhn valleys in the south and the eastern lowlands. Daytime highs of minus three will follow temperatures in the morning between minus seven and one degree to plus three degrees.

From Sunday, calm winter weather prevails in Austria.
On Sunday, the air pressure will rise; thus, more calm winter weather will prevail. There will be a few patches of high fog in the Danube region, the Rhine valley, and the basins in the south. Otherwise, the day will often be sunny, and only high clouds will pass through. Fog patches will also decrease during the day. The wind will be light, occasionally moderate from east to south. Early temperatures range from minus twelve to minus four degrees; daytime highs in the west rise to plus four degrees, and in the east, only minus four to plus one degree.

Monday there will be some clouds, but it will remain mostly dry
Some high clouds will pass through on Monday, especially in the northern half, which is often extensive and dense. Towards the south, it will remain friendlier. It should stay mostly dry, only on the north side of the Alps a few snowflakes can not be completely ruled out, but only tiny amounts will accumulate. In the west, the snow line will rise markedly. The wind will blow mainly weak to moderate from southerly directions; in Lower Austria, it may freshen up briskly at times. After early temperatures of minus ten to minus three degrees, highs will rise to minus two to plus seven degrees, becoming much warmer from the west.

Some high clouds on Tuesday, but overall friendly weather
Also, on Tuesday, some high clouds will pass through again, but generally, the friendly impression will prevail. However, there may be some persistent or high fog in the lowlands and north of the Danube. The wind will be light to moderate at the eastern edge of the Alps, also brisk from southerly directions; in the mountains, it will be slightly foehn. Early temperatures are minus seven to minus one degree, and daytime highs with fog remain partly permafrost in the zero-degree range, but in the west, up to ten degrees are possible.
